The
enforcement program is dedicated to providing equal
opportunities in housing by working to eliminate discriminatory
housing practices and is designed to ensure greater compliance
with Federal, State and Local fair housing laws. It aims
to raise awareness about fair housing laws among community
members, tenants, landlords and housing providers. The goal is
to create an awareness that will allow individuals who are
experiencing discrimination to confidently seek and obtain a
safe living environment. The program also seeks to help
landlords and other housing providers to understand the laws
that affect their relationship with current and prospective
tenants. The program believes in opposing discrimination not
merely, because it is illegal but also because it is immoral.
The
enforcement program provides assistance in filing discrimination complaints as
well as providing support counseling, discrimination investigations, and
attorney referrals to anyone who falls under the protection Title VIII of the
Civil Rights Act of 1968 with the Fair Housing Amendments
Act of 1988, better known as the Fair Housing Act.
